This is a journey, friends. Unlike any humanity has taken. It is time for a new way of being human. Innovative ways to help heal our minds, bodies and nervous systems, build resilience for ourselves and extend it to how we mindfully care for nature.
We seek to rewild the concrete core of Miami by creating the first ever #ParkWIthAPurpose which combines the neuroscientific benefits of mindfulness and the cortisol-lowering impacts of green spaces; all in a nature-based solution.
Introducing our Mindful Coalition of Compassion; a heartful and kindful group of committed community leaders & organizations focused on this innovative solution for lowering anxiety and healing the nervous systems of humans in our Magic City.
Bringing together a combined 47 years of service, collectively we represent certified mindfulness resilience training expertise, native habitat restoration, climate resilience, mental health & wellness, financial equity & access, parks & recreation and civic philanthropy initiatives.
Led by Suzanne Jewell and fiscally sponsored by Cornell Crews, Jr./CRA North Miami, our team includes the Miami Dade County Parks & Recreation Department, the Young Minds Meditate project co-created by Lama Karma Chotso, Chiara Bruzzi, and Suzanne Jewell, Listen Courageously the movie, National Alliance on Mental Illness, Tony Cho's Future of Cities, and Sam VanLeer's Urban Paradise Guild.
New research from the University of Michigan shows the restorative benefits of nature on lowering cortisol levels, yet green space access is not equitable. BIPOC (Black, Indigenous & People of Color) Communities have less access and less welcome to the #GreenSpaceAdvantage offered in more privileged communities.
Cortisol levels can impact the body, mind and emotional state when left unchecked due to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), trauma and unremitting stress. Harvard Research shows Black & Brown youth are hardest hit with chronic health issues over time due to elevated levels of cortisol.
Nearly 5,000 research papers show the mind/body and nervous system benefits of mindful attention training. Resilience and #BounceBackAbility are learnable and, we believe, a powerful one-two-punch for the stress, overwhelm and anxiety felt by so many black & brown nervous systems.
